It’s that time of year

I gave up stressing out over the holiday season. Reminders (memes) about not putting yourself in deep debt over Christmas are regularly showing up now. I think it is a reflection of a changing paradigm.

I mean, really. It is hitting the fan on more than a few fronts. The old guard is under fire for being greedy and selfish. Minorities are standing up and say, “Enough!” Then, there’s the pressure of consumerism laying it on so thick about “What your {insert the person you would feel most guilty about ‘disappointing’} REALLY wants.” How do they know???

What I really want is happiness. For me. My family. For those in need. For those healing from trauma. For those who are fighting so hard for their welfare. For everyone’s welfare.

Is that so hard to grasp?

I guess it is if one believes that happiness has a price tag and can only be bought. Those folks who think everyone else is lazy/cheap/not up to date for not buying the latest and greatest. Those who do not trust themselves to be with themselves. Those who do not trust themselves or even like themselves.

Maybe it is delusional of me to think that people are happy without all the trappings of gilded toilets and cars that cost more than shelter. But I don’t think so.

I have had life experiences which taught me that people are important. People helped me through my cancer experience. People have helped my kids be the brilliant beings they are. People who are a part of my every day life. People who commit to making the world a better place.

So what does all this mean?

It means: Take care of yourselves. Take care of your heart. Your Spirit. Be kind to yourself. Get that massage. Speak kindly of and to yourself. Take a break from the news. Don’t interact to an inflammatory email. Stand up and with someone who needs support.

As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
